Customer Testimonial from Kyle Gurny @Blackcat.Racing

  • Previously I would get 3 flying laps then oil would be approaching 260F (126C) and water over 240F (119C).

  • The R can now outlast the driver. I now can go so long without heat issues that fatigue is now the main hindrance to fun.

  • The temps were so steady in comparison to events prior where oil would hit 270 and water would run out of control causing timing pull and temp warnings. Now, no matter how hard or long the car is pushed she just stays happy and never dropped power due to temps.

  • The same oil type, same pan, same track, and same venting were used on both days, the only change was the addition of the divorced oil cooler setup.

  • The baseline sesson was run on June 15, 2024, before the cooler was added, with an outside air temp 80s to mid 90’s.

    • As you can see, in only 3 laps water temps hit water at 246F (119C) and shortly after, in 5 laps, oil temps were hitting over 270f (133c)! This has been the norm for the past several years, once the coolant would get to a certain temperature it could not cool the oil and temps in both systems contine to rise. The only way to get temps back in control has been to run a cool down laps or two which puts a damper on track day fun.

  • The session on September 15, 2024 was run with the pre-production version of the 529Innovations oil cooler system installed.

    • A summary of the laps with the fully divorced oil cooler setup shows that the absolute max oil was 244F (118C) and coolant temperature was 217F (103C). A drop of 26F (15C) oil and 29F (16C) coolant temps.

    • The only time coolant would get above 200F was when I was drafting other cars down the back straight. As soon as the cooler hit clean air the temps dropped rapidly. You can also see in the top graph how consistant the oil and coolant temps are and with the exception of running into some traffic I was able to push the car to the limit lap after lap. What’s even crazier is that when I came off track to go fill up with fuel, within 3 minutes of normal slow driving, oil was already down to 190f! From track temps to 190 in minutes!

Kyle’s Summary:

  • I threw everything I had at that session with 0 mechanical sympathy and the R just laughed sipping its cooled oil cocktail. She’s never felt happier! As much as I love working on the R, I look forward to not having to change the oil after every track weekend.
